“Acquiring and Using S-Credits”
__________

A submission credit (S-Credit) is simply one letter size copy produced from a microfilm reader that contains one or more obituaries, death notices or news stories about someone’s death. The publications from which these items are extracted must be from the US or Canada and date from between 1890 to 1920. Each S-credit is worth US $.50 and may be used to obtain items from Old Obits.

An example of their use would be as follows: Suppose you find an item in our database that you would like to have a copy of. The usual cost for the item is US $4.50. Instead of submitting a check in that amount you could copy 9-pages of obituaries off of a microfilm reader at your local library and submit them as payment. S-Credits can also be banked. Let’s assume that while at the library you decide to copy 50-pages of material but you only want to order one item from Old Obits at this time. You could send in all 50-pages with your order. We would send you your item and credit you with 41 S-Credits which you could use to purchase $20.50 worth of items at a later date. If you have an S-Credit balance, you will be e-mailed a user name and a password to access “My Account” which you can access at the top of this page. You will then be able to locate your assigned account number and review your account balance on from time to time.

Assuming that your library charges 10-cents per copied page your actual cost of obtaining an item from Old Obits using S-Credits would be $.90 plus the cost of postage.

S-Credits can only be used to obtain items from Old Obits and are not refundable if unused and are not redeemable for any form of currency or its equivalents. All submitted materials become the property of Old Obits and no materials will be returned under any circumstances. (The original submissions will be converted to a digital image and then destroyed.)

Submitted pages for S-Credits must meet certain minimum requirements. Those requirements are:

1. Each page submitted must be a positive image copy.
2. Each page must be letter size.
3. Each page must be properly labeled with the name of the publication and the exact date that the item appeared. Please consult our “Handbook” at the top of this page for labeling instructions. You can also view a properly prepared label in the “Tools” section at the top of this page.
4. We prefer to have pages that are from the same publication on consecutive dates, however at this time, we will accept pages from various publications and dates as long as they are from the US or Canada and date from between 1/1/1890 and 12/31/1920.
5. Submissions must conform to the guidelines as detailed in the “Handbook”.

Old Obits reserves the right to disallow any submission for an S-Credit if it is deemed to be substantially out of compliance with the requirements.
